Are performance management reviews on a deathwatch?

Certain media reports seem to suggest that they are.

Gallup’s recent report, Re-engineering Performance Management evaluated responses from over 60 million employees, gathered by researchers outside of Gallup. Their findings strongly supported the notion that performance management reviews are hugely unpopular among employees and are, in fact, deterrents to promoting workplace engagement. Some of the highlighted discoveries included: ·

  • Only 2 in 10 employees strongly agreed that their performance is managed in a way that motivates them to do outstanding work; and ·
  • only 14% of employees strongly agreed that performance reviews they receive inspire them to improve.

With statistics like this, why do corporations continue to waste time, money and effort on performance management?

While, companies like Accenture, Deloitte and Adobe are leading the industry in changing the face of performance reviews as we know it, SCNetwork's next event focusses on presenting how Wawanesa Insurance is re-hauling their performance management process to combat internal challenges.

The Albany Club
7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

Performance management has earned a mixed reputation over the past few years. What does the future of performance management hold for organizations, leaders, and employees? Can it be refreshed to fit the current economic and business environment? How can performance management be a win-win for employees and management?

Our speakers, Ilana Hechter, Partner at Mercer Consulting, and Jodi Carradice, CHRO at Wawanessa will provide an overview of the current state of performance management, examine the headlines (and bottom-lines) of recent market practices, and discuss the four (4) key performance management activities Mercer has identified through their global research. With the help of a case study, they will present how performance management can be redesigned, by outlining their experience in re-thinking their performance management process, the impetus for change, and some of the challenges they faced in creating a new global program.

In Canada, we’re doing a lousy job of engaging our employees in their work. Current estimates suggest that only 27% are actively and positively engaged. The problem, according to Dr. Dalton Kehoe, is that our study of engagement starts in the wrong place because we completely misunderstand the operations of the human mind. As managers, Kehoe says, if we use our ‘elephant minds’, we are in a better position to make stronger workplace connections, build trust, and release the power to create engaged employees.

Join us to hear from Dr. Dalton Kehoe himself, as he teaches us to speak elephant! Author of Mindful Management: The Neuroscience of Trust and Effective Workplace Leadership, organizational change practitioner, teacher, and communications consultant, Dr. Kehoe will provide detailed insights and examples of how speaking elephant has benefitted several leaders and companies who have adopted this technique.
