Unless you've been living under a rock for the past year or so, "the future of work" is one of those work place buzz phrases you must have encountered at least once a week, if not more. Google spouts out roughly 574,000,000 results (0.48 seconds) for it, in the last count. #FOW is one of the most trending hashtags in the Twittersphere. For some it might garner a "run for the hills" response, while others are ready to embrace it. It sounds more ominous than it is.

That being said, the anxieties and concerns about "the future of work" are valid. Economists, HR pundits, politicians, and researchers are presenting myriad viewpoints and strategies to help understand it's dictates. All of them, however, indicate common touchpoints - that work is increasingly becoming borderless, it's driven by employee experience not employers, the workforce is made up of people in their teens to those well past their 60's, and that it is underscored by technological determinism. This interactive article by Deloitte provides some key insights for those who are still coming to terms with "the future of work".

There's no denying that "the future of work" is presenting unique challenges to businesses and their leaders at a fundamental level. So, here at SCNetwork, we kicked off 2018 with Learning Nation: Equipping Canadians with the work dynamics of the future, where former CEO of MaRS Discover District, Ilse Treurnicht shared some of the work the Advisory Council on Economic Growth has been doing to prepare our country for the inevitable changes. If you missed it, her presentation can be viewed here.

Our upcoming speaker, Lisa Taylor, contends that we're already in "the future of work". This brings our preparation time to zero. The future of work presents us leaders with an urgency that cannot be overstated.
