SCNetwork Toronto Region Newsletter

"Massive amounts of employees, executives, and leaders across North America are engaged, but exhausted. They are dedicated, but depleted", says Brady Wilson, owner of Juice Inc.

They exist in that space between where their intentions are willing, but their brains stutter.

Wilson says that there's a reason why our brains can’t handle everything that's thrown at it on an every day basis. Comprising only 2 per cent of our body weight, it burns 20 per cent of our energy reserves every single day - more than any other organ in our body. Executive functions such as focussing your attention, regulating your emotions, connecting the dots, predicting outcomes, and making decisions, are the first to fall prey to an overworked brain, says Wilson.

When leaders work with employees with depleted brains, they often assume a parenting position. A position where they start to fix things, take things off their employees' plate, instead of sharing, to alleviate the tension.

Our next speaker, Brady Wilson specialises in helping leaders "to shift from parenting to partnering". Whether we want to belong to a tribe, feel safe at work, find purpose or legacy through our work, it's all about making connections to what we want most. Leaders don’t need to be therapists or mind readers to connect with their employees and help them out of the space between. They only have to ask. But asking is an art.

Join us next month to hear from Wilson about how we as leaders can build powerful connections with our teams, that make it seem like magic.

Registering for our speaker event on Dec. 12, does not mean you have RSVP'd for the Holiday Social, right after. So, we request that you RSVP for the Holiday Social separately by Dec. 10th here. It will help our organizers, immensely!

We look forward to seeing you on December 12!

Today, more than ever, we need moments of human connection. But these moments – once prevalent - are becoming an endangered species. Perhaps you want them to flourish. Must you wait for the stars to align or can connection be created?

When you experience a moment of powerful human connection, it feels like magic - not science. But learn the science behind connection, and you see that these powerful moments don't have to be wished or waited for - you can create them.

Science says, "Don't wait - create".

At 4pm sharp, TEDx Speaker, thought leader, and co-founder of Juice Inc., Brady Wilson will present his vision of how we can create a world where businesses pulsate with creative energy. Known for his pragmatic and animated style, Wilson will walk share how you can harness your employees' potential to get them to the point of "A.B.C.D." (going Above and Beyond the Call of Duty). To our member, Gena Restivo from AstraZeneca, and her team for winning HRD Canada's prestigious 2018 BEST WORKPLACE CULTURE Award!!!

We sat down with Gena, recently to ask her about the secrets of their success. Here’s what she said.

A look back to look ahead

"If there’s one lesson from 2018 that I see emerging more and more in 2019, it is the power of social media to mobilize employees that needs to be taken seriously." - Suanne Nielsen

Ask lots of genuine, open ended questions of people you meet. Ask the questions in an interested manner, not an interrogative manner. You'll learn something new, and people will like you because you let them talk about themselves.

Would you hire a job candidate who appeared at an interview dressed in tight leggings, knee-high boots, and a loose tunic? 53 per cent of our event attendees last month said they wouldn’t care how the candidate dressed. What would matter are their skills. However, 32 per cent thought that the candidate needs to probably be a good judge of what they wear to an interview but agreed that skills would matter the most. It’s not a secret that the workplace is changing drastically. Our November speaker, Linda Nazareth has recently published a book on the matter - Work Is Not A Place: Our Lives and Our Organizations in a Post-Jobs Economy. If you missed her presentation, here's your chance to check it out:

It's that time of year...!
