A recent McKinsey article noted that organizational health is built on three tenets. "One is how well the organization aligns around a common strategy. Two, how the strategy then translates down into the work environment-how well the organization executes against its strategy and its ambition. Three is how well it renews itself over time".

Three speaks to looking beyond your organizational walls and tuning into what your customers, clients, and other industries are saying or doing, while keeping a finger on the pulse of your internal innovation engine, so it can transform new insights into new organization capabilities.

Last year, Deloitte identified that organizations need to become more team-centric, agile and networked, as businesses find their sweet spot in the future of work continuum. They also underscored a big hurdle in human capital - that C-Suite needs to start thinking team. "Rather than behave as independent C-level functional experts, the C-suite itself must now operate as a team." They called it the "symphonic C-suite".

But that was last year.

What do you think is the biggest human capital issue today? What forces of change are defining industries across the board, organizational health, and your role as a leader today? What 11,000 global C-Suite executives are saying may surprise you.

Technological advances, government policies, and employee expectations are reshaping what we know as work, while the pace of change continues to accelerate. As artificial intelligence (AI) and automation infuse into everyday life, the opportunities for how people will work and live are significant. But how do we stay ahead? Thriving employees are twice as likely to describe their role as "relationship focussed" and their work environment as "collaborative".

Our valued corporate sponsor, Mercer, recently released their Global Talent Trends 2019 report. Titled "Connectivity in the human age", they've identified 4 key trends to watch out for, after surveying 7,300 respondents globally, which include 800+ C-Suite executives, 1,600+ HR leaders, and 4,800+ employees.

Meeting the needs of different generations

"In all discussions on the future of work, there's a lot of focus around how the wants of people are changing. From an organizational perspective for HR, while there's a need to respond to that and make sure we have the right offering, we also need to keep several implications and considerations front of mind." - Mark Edgar

Fixing clarity to strengthen commitment

Three SCNetwork members discuss Alex Vincent’s presentation on building exceptional teams -

"Fully 80 per cent of teams in a wide cross-section of industries and company sizes are mediocre or weak, performing at five-tenths or less... But it's not for a lack of effort; there's a whole lot of activity going on - just not always in the right direction." - Jan van der Hoop.

Apply the MRI approach to unreturned phone calls

Apply the MRI approach when people don't return your calls. Imagine a most respectful interpretation, MRI, don't take it personally and reach out again in a week or two. If you still don't connect, their loss, it is not meant to be, move on.

Why is distributed work on the rise? Dr. Laura Hambley and Giselle Kovary say that there are many contributors - real estate costs, war for talent, commute times, technological enablement, globalizations, environmental footprint, and contingency planning are just a few of the drivers of this phenomenon in the future of work.
